This is due to the will of John ("to son James")and the location of James and Sarah in same Shaftsbury VT town as John and other sons Stephen and Samuel from 1800 - 1820.

DNA testing is pointing to another possibility that James 1781 is James III,(6); a son of James 1757 (5) and grandson of James 1735 (4).
