Because we have started a round of SNP testing to refine the haplogroup designation of our spelling variants, I have created this page to be one stop source for understanding these tests.
The Basics
We assume a basic understanding of DNA testing, in that it is a scientific process that depends on comparison with other results to mean anything other than a basic Haplogroup designation. Your Haplogroup is an indication of your “deep ancestry” as described in the Journey of Man developed by Spencer Wells and popularized by National Geographic in its Genographic Project.
A good primer for SNP testing is the sample SNP report available from DNA Heritage.
Project Haplogroups
As of early 2008 we have:
- TE/TI spelling - predicted R1b
- DI spelling - predicted R1b actual R1b3 from SNP testing
- DE spelling - predicted I1a, actual I*
- ARDE spelling - predicted R1a, actual R1a1
Determining and Locating the Project Haplogroups
These documents describe how the actual Haplogroup determination was made, with a population distribution map. They are all PDF documents, and will open in Adobe Acrobat reader.
- R1b3 - DI spelling, Descendents of John of 1650 Virginia
- I* - Descendents of William Sturdevant of 1675 Norwalk CT.
- R1a1 - StARDEvant spelling, 1800 VT.
- R Group Haplogroup determination. Why is R1a different from R1b? A graphical description.
- I Group Haplogroup determination. Why and Where does I differ from R? A again a graphical trip down the Haplogroup tree.
